Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy
Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry
Sunshine on the water looks so lovely
Sunshine almost always makes me high
Our dearest remembers this song and the singer ‘John Denver’ with great appreciation and love. One of our dearest’s favourite singers and storytellers brought her a great deal of joy. Is this true, dearest?
Yes indeed it is true. I adored this man’s ability to bring stillness to the heart. He was certainly ‘one in a million’ as the saying goes.
And today, dearest, we would like to capture a little of that joy. Yes?
I don’t quite know what you mean by that. But, yes, a little joy would be delightful.
Indeed, dearest, we shall. It is about ‘sunshine’ that we would like to speak. Yes?
Yes certainly; do go ahead.
What can you tell us about sunshine, dearest?
Firstly, I have learned that sunshine on the skin produces Nitric Oxide, and also Vitamin D via chemical exchanges.
And what is Nitric Oxide, dearest?
I have learned that Nitric Oxide, and the body’s ability to produce this molecule, is paramount to health. Without this gas being produced within the body comes, over time, ageing and the many health concerns of ageing.
And Vitamin D, dearest?
This vitamin is also responsible for many health functions without which, ill-health must result.
Both ‘sunshine’ related, dearest.
Yes, this is true. However, there are many other ways in which we can produce Nitric Oxide, particularly via the diet and exercise.
And what do you suggest for those who cannot obtain health from sunshine?
Even being out in the open on a cloudy day will benefit. I take a 1000IU vitamin D3 daily, even though I do get sunshine; particularly early morning sunshine when the infrared rays and the ultra violet rays (both ends of the spectrum) are beneficial. Twenty to thirty minutes being optimal.
And what can you tell us regarding sunscreens?
You, The C.C. have always warned me against using sunscreens; opting instead to be aware of other means of protection against too much sun exposure – such as clothing, hats, and protecting oneself from the stronger more harmful exposure to sunshine during the hotter periods of the day; i.e., limiting the time spent in sunshine, and certainly not allowing the skin to burn.
Common sense, dearest?
Yes, most definitely common sense. It was very reassuring to hear Dr Nathan Bryan suggesting that to put such chemicals upon our bodies is a harmful practice. Indeed, many of the health suggestions that you have offered to me, over the years, are now becoming more and more appreciated and accepted as being optimal for good health.
Indeed so, dearest.

A little sunshine every day!
Yes, Dorothy, when it’s available.
It’s now 7:40am Saturday morn. I’ve come inside from sunbathing a little while ago. I’ve done a few exercises – some squats and curtsy lunges, and am feeling so warm from the sunshine. (Going further into spring makes getting out in the sun so inviting. Not so inviting on cooler days, though.)
This new routine, coupled with a daily green leaf salad, non-fluoridated toothpaste and drinking water (plus other new habits) are beginning to have their results. I’m feeling quite amazing getting up early (again) and spending more time on my own good health.
Sounds like a beautiful routine! We’re on the other end of the light, of course, but still have a morning here and there for lots of sun on my face!
Lulu: “Our Dada is not a fan of being out in the sun, but he hates sunscreen, too! So usually he wears long sleeves and long pants if he is going to be out for a long time. And he always wears a big hat!”
Lulu – hello sweet girl… 😉😉
Your Dada is very wise; long sleeves and long pants plus a big hat is just the thing for keeping ourselves protected.
I do really enjoy the sunshine, but only in the early morn and late afternoon. Otherwise I’m not a fan either!
Here’s hoping Bean is not keeping you exhausted with his exuberance!
Sunny days are the best. They make me feel so energized.
They do, Sheryl; I wholeheartedly agree.
I have been getting out in the early morn lately and it’s been fabulous. Nothing like the warmth of the sun to brighten the day – in all ways!
