Broken Wing

A darling little Peewee (Magpie-lark) with a ‘damaged’ wing has been gracing our garden, and close neighbouring gardens, for a couple of years. We have named him ‘Broken Wing’.

He can fly; however, not long extended flight, as do the other Peewees. He can mainly be seen pecking about for tasty morsels, most mornings and evenings.

We have seen, on a number of occasions, other little and various young mates by his side. However, they do not last long. No, his disability seems to mean his partnering lasts but a short while. We have given up hoping he may find a forever partner.

I have often thought his ‘life plan’ is surely a difficult one. And yet, who am I to judge? He is loved by the whole neighbourhood; everyone looks out for him; he certainly eats very well – his diet seemingly varied and satisfying; and (albeit quite selfishly) his company, at least for us humans, is a most pleasant one.

I captured him this morning walking from our front garden, across the road, and to the other side where he continued to feed. It is, and has been quite a magical experience to find him in our front garden or backyard on the ‘food hunt’, or somewhere close by in neighbouring homes pecking about at the wealth of food available.

Broken Wing’s left wing can be seen drooping almost to the ground.

This little bird has come to be very special in my life. He is always close to my thoughts. My little heart jumps for joy whenever I see him. And I find myself looking for him every day.

It surprises me how touching I find his presence; and how much I look forward to seeing him. Perhaps the best things in life ARE free!

    1. I do believe, Michael, he is as good as he will get. It’s been, at least, maybe more than two years now since we first noticed him wandering about with his drooping wing. He has made quite a success of his life, regardless of this drawback. I see him as a survivor with grit and determination.

What would be a good name for him?

        1. Hahaha…
Neither do I, Michael. He/she is quite discreet; keeping such things ‘private’ 🥰
However, there are many names that are gender neutral.

          Taylor – Avery – Blake – Logan – Jamie 🤗

          I’m sure there’s a name for him/her.

          What say you?
