Ermilia’s Picture it & write (Sunday 07 April 2013)
Once again, here is my offering to ‘Picture it & write’ hosted by Ermilia (Ermisenda and Eliabeth) who invite others to join them by writing a fictional story or poem to accompany an image presented on their blog.
Two of his favourite treasures.
He was apt to keep those things he held dear.
Butterflies had been a love since childhood. He watched as they unfolded their wings in the early morning sunlight, free from the ties that bind.
He’d always enjoyed their freedom; he’d not known freedom as a child. No, life for him was less than free; less than love; less than joy. Life for him had been harsh, troublesome, gritty; like sand between the teeth.
And yet, when he escaped into the garden he was met with fresh air; fresh thought; fresh sight. Oh, how he loved the butterfly.
One particular butterfly came to rest upon his other love that morning. Nestled in the eye of his mother could be seen one of his favourites; its eye resembling his would be torturer’s eye, as if to mock. And yet, he thought; he had the last laugh.
I read this several times and – you don’t mean to tell us that his mother is his would-be torturer and that is her skull. Too gruesome. Grew up to be like a chip off his old mother’s block (head), huh.
Hahaha… Indeed yes, Randy…. A chip off the old blog…! 🙂
What’s the old saying: ‘Like mother, like son..!?!’ Gruesome, yes; though I can’t help but love and admire this man’s love for butterflies… He can’t be ‘all THAT bad…!’ 😉 😉
don’t let the butterflies fool ya. Yes, he can be all that bad….
an eerie, twisted tale well-told… ^^ love the almost creepy reverence for butterflies and the attachment to his mother. great story
That’s how I view it, kz… creepy reverence for butterflies, and to his mother in a sick and perverted sense… haha…
You know; I’ve never been a fan of this ‘creepy’ type of writing until Pi&w. Now I’m finding myself enjoying this style of writing… Eeek: I’m becoming a fan of the ‘dreaded horror story’… lol…. 🙂
haha this one’s more than the ordinary horror story.. it’s a peek at the mind of a creep, so i think it’s great 🙂 it’s good to try new things/genres even just to see if it fits ^^
Indeed, kz…. Here’s to all new things… Cheers… xoxoxo 🙂
You really went all out this this. A creepy guy who love the delicate butterflies but has a twisted side. A good write.
Indeed, dear Kim; a twisted side; to be sure…
I had a lot of fun doing this one… He certainly is creepy..! I’m happy it’s just fiction… 😉
Aw, it’s nice to see a son who still keeps his Mummy close.
You have me ‘laughing out loud’, Anne…. 😆
‘Nestled in the eye of his mother…’ Nice line! 🙂 Very enjoyable read at an early hour!
Thank You so much…. 🙂
We certainly had a great image for inspiration…! 😉
reminded me of the serial killer of “silence of the lambs”!
Oh, Sharmishtha…. I still shudder at the thought of that movie… What an incredible acting delivery by one of my all time favourite actors; Anthony Hopkins. Chilling, and so suspenseful..! 😯
Just when I thought how poetic this was, Carolyn, you went all ‘Norman Bates’ on us! Gross ending! Great story.
Haha, Yaz; as you know I do like to surprise, and Norman Bates was certainly surprising; to be sure…! 🙂
In fact, I surprised myself with this ‘eerie’ character…. Don’t want him for a neighbour; that’s for sure…! 😉
The story gave me the creeps. Well done 🙂
What a wonderful compliment… 🙂
Now, I hope you’re okay and not thinking about creepy sons who do strange things to those he….. loves..! 🙂
entirely a different perspective. Nice! 🙂
Thank You, Ellen… It was the first impression I had when I saw the image…
I love the image, btw; there is something beautiful yet macabre about it…!
Hence the story…. 🙂
I read it again, it still gives me goosebumps 🙂
Goosebumps are good…!
Thank You so much; lovely of you to tell me…. 🙂
a twist in the delicate tale Carolyn! loved it
Thank You, Soumyav… So happy you enjoyed it..! 🙂
Last laugh indeed!!!
Such a cool story Carol 😉
Thank You, Ghia… It was ‘cool’ creating it.. I am beginning to enjoy these ‘creepy, strange tales’…! 😯
And it’s ‘excellent’ to see you, my friend…! 🙂
My dear Carolyn, it seems you can write any genre, even horror. You have a way of being inside of your characters, and it always makes the poignant part of the message come through. Love this! xoxoxo
I am beginning to realise, Resa, that I write from the mind of my characters; in the main. You are wonderful to observe that, and such comments are helping me to understand my ‘type’ of writing style…. Well, well…. I have a ‘writing style’..!!! That’s a good start for me because I haven’t until now, understood such things… You are wonderful to have helped me find myself… xoxoxo 🙂
You definitely have a style of writing!
Love you! 🙂 xoxoxo
Ditto, ditto, ditto….
Just read this, Carolyn..real horror, this is..but effective writing
Thank You, Padmini; I’m surprising myself because I’m enjoying this style of writing…! Eek… 🙂
Only you and Buffalo Bill (from “Silence of the Lambs”) could make butterflies creepy! I kid, because this was very enjoyable. But creepy. I wasn’t kidding about that!
Thank You, Smak..!
Something not right ’bout making butterflies creepy..! 😉
holly gsus, I can only imagine where you are going with this. Definitely, creepy…ha…ha
So sweet; his love for the flutterby, and yet, sooooooo creepy..!
Muah ha hah….. 😉
Chilling stuff, Carolyn
I loved it!
I’m having such fun, my dear Hook…. And now I’ve found ‘creepy’ stuff too…. I feel like a kid with a big lollypop…. 😉
Something very warm and tender still within this man, or so we think until the end of the story! This was so well-written Carolyn and reminds me of news reports or movies made upon serial killers. Great stuff! 🙂
Yes, LuAnn, they (serial killers) can seem such inconspicuous types, or butter wouldn’t melt in their mouths types, yet they pack such a mental surprise for the innocent…
Happy you enjoyed; it was quite a pleasure to write this one – surprisingly..! 😉
You do so well with these ‘picture it and write’. 🙂
The narrator appears like a crazy guy… and weird also, which I find very interesting! Love your contribution!
That’s precisely what he is, Daph; a crazy, weird guy….! 😉 😉
And how did you get into his crazy, weird mind? Is it hard to write about someone or something that doesn’t think like you do? You did a great job of it!
Haha, Marcia…. That’s one of the best comments I’ve ever had..! 😉
I’ve always had a ‘colourful’ imagination…! That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it… 😉
hahaha ok, I believe you. But I’m keeping an “eye” on you when I see butterflies collecting around something! 🙂
