Roller Skates

I’d love to share my beautiful daughter’s most recent post highlighting her newest adventure. Roller Skating! Not only is she currently enjoying this new/old activity; Veronica has entered her name for the local Roller Derby League. 🙂 Go Vronnie! 🙂

Freedom From Fear

After a 27 year absence I laced up some roller skates last October. Purchased custom made skates in December and have now put my name down for the local Roller Derby league.

As a child I always felt freedom and love for skating.

I informed a friend of my new purchase and he exclaimed. Veronica people our age are getting away from those kind of sports, you know the ones, where agility and balance are needed. To that I laughed and shook my head in agreement.

This is precisely why I had never put my skates back on.

Fear of falling and injuring myself, fear of peoples response to me while on skates and of my discussions with them about my love of roller skating.

How times have changed. I know longer fear……..

    1. Thank You so much, Megala; it has been quite a ride for Veronica and myself over the past number of years!
To see her doing something she has always loved is such a joy; and the joy is almost palpable on her face.
Did you see the little video she posted of her skating? It is so cute. 🙂

    1. I do so agree with you, JMR. We can live our lives in fear of ‘something happening’, which it may well do. Or, we can take that proverbial bull by its horns 🐮 and throw it for all it’s worth… Hahah… 🙂
I’m so pleased for her! 🙂

    1. It is Barbara; very uplifting indeed.. 🙂
I’m still a proud mum; even though she is now a woman with three grown sons I still get such a kick out of her accomplishments… Guess; once a mum always a mum! 🙂

  1. That’s awesome! It’s so important for children to have a niche of their own. My daughter does gymnastics, and she LOVES it. It’s her own thing she can do and something she enjoys. I am so proud of her. Good luck to your daughter. Thank you for sharing! 🙂

    1. I agree with you; it is awesome!
And I feel the same as you – proud to have a daughter who loves life and doing that thing she loves the best… Well done to you and your daughter! 🙂

Sometimes it is so good being a mum; at other times it’s fantastic! 😉 😉

    1. I know Veronica will agree with you wholeheartedly, Jo. She is enjoying this ride so very much. I haven’t seen her ‘this’ happy since her teenage years when she spent most weekends skating!
      She is awesome! 🙂
      And, you are too!!! 🙂

  2. She is lucky she got your nod. Recently I decided to buy a bike to ride (walking being so boring 😇) but so far meet absolute resistance from my wife And children. You might fall break hip bone l say I will ride where I walk in the park on the walk way. Have you seen any your age cycling there. Well time they see one now. hope I will not now cow down this time unlike last month when I returned electric saw.

    1. Oh, Shakil… I do appreciate your sentiments so much! They remind me of a neighbour I once had. She was an elderly woman who loved to garden. She had a heart attack. Her doctors and family members said she should give up that love and stay indoors watching television and knitting. After a number of weeks of this she told me. “To heck with the TV and knitting. I want to spend the rest of my years doing what I love.”
We moved from that house some months later. In the meantime, though, she could be seen in her garden almost every day enjoying her life, the sunshine, talking to passers by and, in general, loving her life.
We know the fear our loved ones have for us is out of their love and best wishes for us. But, in the overall scheme of things; how can we negate the joy and sense of accomplishment we gain by doing those things we want, and love, to do… All the best with your desire, Shakil… I’ll be thinking of you… 🙂

    1. Hahah, Resa… This great song, by Melanie, was produced just two years prior to Vronnie’s birth!
I am so pleased for her, Resa. She is absolutely over the moon. She has bought all the gear for the Roller Derby; and has been accepted into the ‘inner core’, going to their practice/social nights, etc. It’s so good to see her ‘light up’ whenever she mentions it…. 🙂
She sure does have a brand new pair of roller skates.. 🙂
      Adore you!

  3. Oh, that’s amazing! Granny loved to roller skate too. Deep bow for your daughter, Carolyn that she goes beyond fears. Granny gave up on skating when children were making fun of her. Not that Granny couldn’t roller skate, but because she was to old in their eyes, so Granny let her fun take away by a bunch of children🙀Pawkisses for a Happy Tuesday and skating🐾😽💞

    1. Oh Binky; that is such a sad thing to happen to Granny – naughty children!
Veronica is very lucky because she skates socially with others her same age, younger and older with families and their children; this was how she started skating again – not in a skate rink, as such. And now, she and her husband also skate along the foreshore on the footpaths. This is where she took the little video with the big smiles! Hahah…
I don’t suppose, though, that in your country where it is snowing just now that you would be able to skate outdoors! This just isn’t fair, Binky. I do hope, though, that somehow Granny can get her skates on! In the meantime I will send you both lots of pawkisses… 🐾🐾🐾

    1. And I agree with you, dear Mihaela; trusting our heart and ourselves is a great way to go! 🙂
Vronnie really surprised us all a few months back when, after talking about skating, produced (a couple of days later) a new pair of skates and plans to get them back on her feet… hahah.. She never does ‘mess about’ once her mind has been make up!
She also admits that ‘backwards aging’ has been responsible! Go Vronnie!
And, go Mihaela! Have yourself a wonderful new day! 🙂

  4. Will check it out now! Wishing her all the best for getting into the derby league, that’s amazing. I’ve always wanted to try skating, but I never have. Maybe this is the year to find a second hand pair and give it a go (with all-over body padding, because I think I’d need it!) 🙂
    Caz xx

    1. Hahaah, Caz – I’ll tell a little story:! 🙂
Vron was about seven or eight. We were at the local skate rink enjoying ourselves. I hadn’t skated for, at least, a decade, but, I could ‘get about’, so to speak. A group of young boys were making nuisances of themselves, you get my drift. Keeping one eye on them, the other on Vronnie wasn’t the smartest thing I’ve ever done!
Ouch, my left wrist hurt as I landed on it. Back on my feet protecting my beautiful daughter it happened again. But, this time I heard and ‘felt’ a snap!
Our car was a manual. I depressed the clutch and Vron put the gear stick into second. We drove the few kilometres to the hospital, and then home with my wrist in a cast and my arm in a sling! 🙂
Hahah; we’ve had some memorable experiences together… I’ll tell the tale of my fractured ankle, whilst protecting her, on another occasion! Yes, it’s true. I’d do anything for her… 🙂
      xoxoxo

      1. Oh ouch! You are like a mamma bear, protecting her cub. I love that! If only you weren’t on skates at the time! After all of that, did you ever put the skates back on again? xx

        1. Short answer, Caz – NO! Ha ha hah… 🙂
I’ll leave that for the skating enthusiasts; including Vronnie..
Dancing is more than enough for me… 💃🕺 and for me, it’s probably safer!!! 🙂
          xoxoxo

    1. Yes, Vanessa; Veronica is indeed an inspiration! It will be wonderful watching as she progresses – something I’ve been a part of her entire life! Lucky me; she is awesome! 🙂

Sending lots of love and kisses! ❤

  5. Woohoo, I wish her all the best with this activity! May her health and mind align as she roller skates 😀 I used to do that activity and had so much fun!

      1. Way too long. I used to live on mine. I didn’t have a car so they took me to the grocery store/ work/ school 😄 but we ended up with water damage on our house and they couldn’t be saved… time to look for new ones!!

        1. How sad for your skates. I actually threw mine out and when I decided to get back I had to buy new ones. I can relate to living on your skates, they where my bus and train. I am looking forward to being that fit again 😊

                1. As you know skates are very personal items. I prefer shoes over boots. Always have. I’m lucky enough to have a derby shop that is able to custom make skates. I suggest you look into any and all shops that sell skates and try on as many as it takes. You will know when you find the pair for you. 🧐
